The existence and function of each organ and each system demonstrate the power and wonder of the human body. Today we can focus specifically on the penis as an interesting body part where physiology and psychology are intertwined.
The penis is part of the male reproductive system and is mainly responsible for two major physiological functions: urination and sexual behavior. It consists of the corpus cavernosum, urethra, and external skin. During sexual excitement, the corpus cavernosum becomes congested, causing the penis to erect. This process is driven by the coordinated action of systems such as nerves, blood vessels, and hormones. After erection, the penis can be used for sexual intercourse and sperm delivery, and is an important organ in the reproductive process.
Fact 1: Babies can be born with erections
Babies can be born with erections. In fact, in a study of 50 male fetuses at approximately 36 to 39 weeks of age, the penises were measured multiple times via ultrasound and found that 12 of the fetuses had an erection 22% of the time, with erections lasting anywhere from five to 17 minutes. While the exact reasons for fetal erections aren't entirely clear, it's thought to be related to the developing nervous system. Additionally, studies have shown that female fetuses may also experience clitoral erections in utero, and sometimes male fetuses have even been caught on ultrasound engaging in masturbation-like activity.

The penis is not a muscle. Contrary to popular misconception, the penis is actually a cylindrical structure made up of three spongy tissues, called the corpora cavernosa and the corpora spongiosum. During an erection, the spongy tissues fill with blood, which makes the penis hard and erect. So, sorry, you can't train your penis like you would any other muscle.

The average man will experience 3 to 5 erections per night, and they may even play a role in maintaining penile health by continuing to supply blood to the penis, even during the night.

Interestingly, early human ancestors, chimpanzees, and other animals had spines on their penises. These spines weren't the spines you'd normally think of like on a hedgehog, they were actually small, pointy protrusions on the outer surface of the organ that made the surface rough. There are a few reasons why these spines are thought to exist. One theory is that they were used to expel semen from other partners, as these animals would often have multiple intercourses with multiple partners. It's also been suggested that the spines may have made the penis more sensitive, allowing them to ejaculate and have sex more quickly. Apparently, humans don't have these spines, and the reason for this is that they found a specific gene that codes for the spines, as well as whiskers, found in mammals and chimpanzees, but is missing in our genetic code. It's thought that losing these snippets of genetic code allowed us to develop larger brains, so we gave up the spines on our penises to get a larger brain. This may also have allowed us to be more intimate, have longer intercourse, and have more complex interactions with our partners.

Shoe size or height are not reliable predictors of erection size. I'm sorry to tell you, but no matter what your shoe size is or how tall you are, science has proven that this actually has nothing to do with penis length. While there is some evidence that penis size may be influenced by genetics, height or shoe size has not been shown to have any correlation with it. In fact, studies have shown that there is a lot of variation in penis length among people, and factors like obesity and smoking can affect penis health. There was one Japanese study that did find a body part that correlated with penis length, you'll have to watch my video to find out which organ it was.

You can orgasm without having an erection. An orgasm is a different physiological response from an erection, and although we often combine the two and many people have an erection first and then orgasm, it is possible to experience an orgasm without having an erection. So, if you suffer from erectile dysfunction, you can still have an orgasm.

You can break it. A penile fracture is a rare but serious injury that can occur during intense sexual activity. In fact, one in every 175,000 emergency room visits is due to a penile fracture. It is usually caused by the penis being forcibly bent in the wrong direction during an erection, common in certain types of sexual positions like reverse woman on top or falling with an erection. The good news is that if you stop, especially if you're young and don't have severe erectile dysfunction, you may be able to maintain a normal healthy erection. So if you haven't been convinced by me to quit smoking, please seriously consider it, if not for me, then for the sake of maintaining your penis length.
